Prologue: Facing Up 1

MY FAVOURITE DROPS

“Our media rewards criminal and yobbish behaviour with celebrity and then complain that today’s young people have no values. Middle and upper class children are photographed behaving badly; but we giggle at their antics, and label working class children CHAVs (council housing and violent) for acting out similar antics. And in the face of such double standards, we think nothing of pointing our fingers at single mothers, the modern day witches, for the breakdowns our children are suffering. Such double standards are breathtaking.”

TASHIE’s TAKE 2

The aspect of people being rewarded as celebrities for portraying hideous behaviours especially on social media is a cause of concern that got to me. Most of the content being watched on social media platforms are things that no man on this planet earth ever thought would exist in the history of mankind. Recently on twitter there was a video which was trending of a young man who was having sexual intercourse with a snake, watching the comments I found some more people uploading that kind of an act. The audacity of even posting such a disturbing video for the whole world to see, was shocking. At the end of the day, you may find it is not that person alone who’s been doing this. Other people have been doing it with dogs, cattle, hens to mention but a few and all these are uploaded for the rest of the world to see, for what benefit? And to think that our children are also having access to these platforms. What are we really teaching our young people? At the same time we cannot just blame parenting skills, because most parents be it African or whatever race are trying to raise their children the best way they can. The question is where are we all going wrong? Besides the parenting being given to the child, there are other institutions that surround them, where they are also learning the things they portray in their day to day life. Even these suicidal activities, the abuse of drugs and more, where are they getting it from? These are questions I asked myself.….
